Harrodsburg gets funding for water system

HARRODSBURG — U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler joined U.S. Department of Agriculture officials Thursday at Harrodsburg city hall to announce funding to help update the city’s water system.
The $7.7 million loan and $3.3 million grant from the USDA and the Recovery Act will expand the city’s current water treatment plant to meet the needs of its more than 3,700 customers.
U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler, D-Ky., center, along with Michael McCall, president of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, and Bluegrass Community and Technical College President Dr. Augusta Julian, toured the Winchester-Clark County Campus of BCTC Tuesday. The tour included the Bluegrass Children’s Academy, where they watched Meredith Boone, background, and Harley VonBerhen nap. Chandler was visiting the facility to see how funds from a $335,000 grant he secured for BCTC were used.

U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler says Social Security might require a few minor “tweaks” to remain solvent but predicts it will benefit seniors for another 75 years.
Saturday was the 75th anniversary of the program President Franklin Roosevelt created. There are 52.5 million members, and they receive average monthly payments of about $1,100 according to the Social Security Administration.

RICHMOND — B&H Tool of Richmond has received a $2.3 million low-interest loan from the federal government that will keep the metal stamping business in operation and its more than 80 local workers employed.

WASHINGTON (June 7, 2010)—Today at an event at the firehouse in Montgomery County, Congressman Chandler joined city and fire officials to announce the allocation of $85,800 in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) to the Montgomery County Fire Department. This money will be used to purchase two new fire trucks for the department. After the announcement, Chandler met with local officials and toured the areas affected by May’s severe flooding.

An activist says a measure stripped at the last minute from a defense bill recently approved by the U.S. House could have delayed chemical weapons destruction in Kentucky by up to two years.
Craig Williams of the Chemical Weapons Working Group said Wednesday he doesn't know how the proposed language got into an early version of the 2011 defense authorization bill last week or even who proposed it.
Today, Congressman Chandler issued a statement:
"Dr. Paul's words are insulting, unacceptable, and literally tear at the fabric of our nation. The Civil Rights Act is one of the fundamental underpinnings of today's society and is firmly rooted in the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution."
